5-10 m3 per room

Count five to ten cubic metres per room. A two-bedroom flat is about 10 to 20 m3; a three-bedroom, 20 to 30; a four-bedroom house or larger, 30 to 45. The most expensive quoting error in this corridor: giving the volume in cubic feet when the quote assumes cubic metres. There is a factor of 35 between them. “650 cube” can mean 18 m3 or 650 m3.

Cubic feet and cubic metres are not the same thing

The 35x error
One cubic metre is 35.3 cubic feet

The most expensive quoting error in this corridor: giving the volume in cubic feet when the quote assumes cubic metres. There is a factor of 35 between them. “650 cube” can mean 18 m3 or 650 m3. On the UK corridor the English firm may be thinking in feet and the Spanish end in metres. Always say the unit out loud.

Volume is measured full, not empty

Two 80 m2 flats can be 12 m3 and 28 m3. What takes up space in the lorry is full wardrobes, the store cupboard and the garage, not the floor area.

If you do not know, say so

An honest estimate with a margin gets corrected on the phone in two minutes. An invented number gets corrected on the day, with the lorry outside and the meter running.

Volume questions

Frequently asked
How many cubic metres is a three-bedroom house?

20 to 30 m3 in most cases, putting the move in the EUR 350 to 800 band within the province. With a full store cupboard or garage it easily reaches 35 m3.

How many boxes fit in a cubic metre?

About ten standard removal boxes. It is a useful check that your estimate is not short.

What is 650 cubic feet in cubic metres?

About 18 m3. This exact confusion is documented in the corridor: a poster quoting “approx 650 cube” was asked whether that meant metres or feet, a 35-fold difference.

How much does a furnished flat take up?

A lived-in two-bedroom is close to 20 m3; a three-bedroom close to 30. The reference conversion is 5 to 10 m3 per room, and the high end is the realistic one if you have lived there for years.

Should they survey my house?

For a full move, ideally yes, in person or by video. A fixed quote given without seeing the access or the volume is exactly the one that changes on the day.

Does volume affect the municipal permit?

Indirectly, and considerably. More volume means a bigger lorry, and above 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass the requirement becomes explicit in the ordinances that spell it out. Using a furniture hoist triggers it too.
